Welcome to The Sports Bank 77 in 77. We’re previewing one team a day everyday as the college football season approaches. And we’re doing it in rapid fire sequence. Today, the Florida State Seminoles
2011 was: disappointing, as is any 8-4 record for a team with great history, great expectations, and a good coach. Three straight losses to Oklahoma, Clemson, and Wake Forest left the Seminoles in a hole they could not dig themselves out of early in the season. Sure, they won their bowl. But a Champs Sports Bowl victory over a so-so Notre Dame is not going to cut it if Jimbo Fisher wishes to maintain his position as the Noles head coach.
2012 wil be a success if: EJ Manuel can become a true leader the offense. Manuel did well last season, but he will have to improve after throwing only 18 TD passes. If he is not capable to move the offense through the air more consistently, the Seminoles will find themselves left out of the ACC title hunt, once again. However, FSU is young and talented enough to be a great team, not only in the ACC, but the country. But the key will be whether or not EJ Manuel can lead this team from under center.
2012 will be rough if: the young players on the Noles fall apart during a tough season. Florida State has their fair share of juniors and seniors coming back this season, but they will have to depend greatly on sophomore talent…especially on the offensive side of the ball. If some of their youth cracks under the pressure of an ACC schedule, Jimbo Fisher and their coaching staff will find themselves in trouble against Clemson, and Virginia Tech. Oh, and let’s not forget about Florida.
BMOC: Besides EJ Manuel, the entire offensive line. The unit is full of returning starters that will have to give Manuel the time and protection the help him be successful under center. And they have the talent to be wildly successful this season.
All Name Team: OG Jacob Fahrenkrug, LB Ukeme Eligwe, TE Christo Kourtzidis
Bottom Line: This season should be a good one for FSU. They have tons of returning talent that could lead them to an undefeated season. However, it is more likely they end at 10-2. The Seminoles have had a knack for losing games they have no business loosing. I have them losing one they shouldn’t to maybe Miami, or North Carolina State. Add one of those to a loss to either Virginia Tech or Florida, and I’d say a 10-2 record is what the Seminoles can come up with this season.
